Double Essence was founded in the early 1990’s as a promotional vehicle for my musical endeavors. There was at that time a burgeoning independent music scene within the larger, more visible industry. There were artists like Ani diFranco, labels like Rounder and Rhino, and in Canada, Stony Plain and True North, who found followers outside the influence of mainstream media (i.e. radio and video), “avant-garde” at that time, that soon became the norm for the many artists whose aesthetic didn’t match the format of the day. From these humble beginnings, in the days before Internet marketing and social networking, when most of us didn’t have funding from major corporations and couldn’t afford to record at home, has evolved the phenomenal creative growth of “indie” artistic businesses, reflected in today’s landscape of YouTube, myspace, Twitter, Facebook and podcasting.
Moving into the promotion and marketing fields in these challenging times may seem like folly to some but I believe there is no better time than now to allow the voices of these great talents to be heard. With the recent launch of The Scottmandu Review, my monthly newsletter and Double Essence Films, as well as regular live showcases of talent from across Canada, I remain committed to creating a space in the world where creative work in the arts is valued and remunerated for the unique contributions it brings to our cultural and spiritual well-being.
